How popular will the novel be?

Do you enjoy novels? I enjoy both reading and writing novels. However, in this era of diverse media, the popularity of novels seems to be declining compared to the past. Therefore, regarding the future of novel popularity, I have the following thoughts.

In a world dominated by video content and short-form formats today, the question "Can novels really survive?" is frequently raised. However, the popularity of novels is not fading; rather, it is in the process of gaining even more powerful vitality by combining with new media.

1. The Transition from Text to IP

In the modern literary market, novels are being treated as the original source for all content, going beyond mere reading material.

  • Popular web novels and paper books are expanding into webtoons, dramas, movies, and games.
  • To minimize risk, producers choose novels as their top priority source material, as their narrative completeness and entertainment value have already been verified by readers. Therefore, their popularity is being driven not only by the sales volume of the novels themselves but also by their potential for expansion.

I also hope that the novels I have written will be made into movies, but the probability of that happening is 0%.

 2. New Demand Created by the Lack of Immersion

While stimulating visuals provide immediate pleasure, they have limitations in touching the deep inner self.

  • Unlike the results presented by visuals, novels offer the intimate psychology of characters and the space between sentences.
  • The nature of novels, where readers must construct their own images, will remain a form of play that most actively stimulates the brain.

In today's era of information overload, novels will instead establish themselves as a high-value hobby and a means of self-improvement.

3. Symbiosis with AI

The emergence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) may appear to be a crisis for novels, but it is simultaneously an opportunity.

  • The rise of web novel platforms has opened an era where anyone can become a writer.
  • In the future, AI will contribute to building more sophisticated worldviews by perfectly analyzing readers' tastes to suggest personalized stories or by assisting writers in the writing process.

The popularity of novels may move somewhat away from the literary authority of the past. However, as long as the human instinct to crave stories does not disappear, the novel will maintain its status as the most economical yet profound narrative medium. The novel is now evolving from a mere stack of paper into a bridge between the digital and analog realms where our imagination resides.

As someone who loves novels, I hope the popularity of novels grows.
